Al Jazeera America Will Not Recognize Union

A labor relations board vote is now underway.

The management team of Al Jazeera America (AJAM) has decided not to recognize the unionization push by AJAM Digital staffers. The newsroom voted to be repped by the NewsGuild of New York earlier this month.

As a result of AJAM’s decision, a National Labor Relations Board-administered election on the unionizing effort has been launched. Voting begins today, with mail-in ballots accepted through Oct. 5.

“While we are disappointed that Al Jazeera America management did not voluntarily recognize its digital employees’ decision to join a union, we are confident that the will of the newsroom will be reflected in the NLRB election that begins today,” said NewsGuild of New York President Peter Szekely.
