NY Times Trying Bring James Bennet Back

If you love someone, set them free. Then ask them to come back a few years later.

The New York Times wants James Bennet back. According to Politico, the Times is attempting to convince Bennet—who currently serves as editor of The Atlantic—to return to the paper in a senior role.

Bennet previously worked for the Times from 1991 to 2006. During his stint there he covered presidential campaigns and served as Jerusalem bureau chief.

Interestingly, Politico reports that the key to luring Bennet away from The Atlantic might be showing him his path forward at the Times:

If Bennet were to return to the Times in a high-ranking position, sources said, it could even put him in line to succeed executive editor Dean Baquet, for whom there is no single clear heir apparent among the newsroom’s senior leaders.
