2016 TVNewser Challenge: The Results

By Chris Ariens

It’s time for that annual TVNewser tradition, the TVNewser Challenge, where we ask you to make predictions for the coming year in TV news. But first, a look back at your predictions from 2016. The first question we asked last year at this time had to do with the biggest story of 2016, the presidential election:

Nearly 50 percent of you said Fox News would come out on top on election night, and it did for the full night of viewing (7 p.m – 3 a.m.). But CNN was most watched in viewers and the demo for prime time (8 p.m. – 11 p.m.). CNN had the largest share of younger viewers for the full night. Both networks set ratings records.

The majority said Carly Fiorina, followed by Ben Carson (who has been tapped as HUD Secretary in the Trump administration). But Fox hasn’t signed on with any former candidate. 9 percent of you said Donald Trump. But he’ll be busy for a while.

Not so much exactly the same. Many changes, in fact. In April, Michaela Pereira left CNN and launched here new LA-based morning show in July. In early June, Erica Hill left NBC for HLN. Her new daytime show launched in October. Later in June, Nancy Grace announced she was leaving the network. In October, Ashleigh Banfield took over the 8 p.m. hour.

Adele was a good guess, but the Today show team went with a 90s theme in 2016, and Matt dressed as puffy shirt Jerry Seinfeld.

Sort of. Brian Williams is back on MSNBC, but just out of prime time, with his program, The 11th Hour, airing at 11 p.m. For the week of Dec. 12, the show beat CNN’s 11 p.m. program in both viewers and the demo for the full week.

This was a close one. And a vague one. But neither CNN nor ABC saw a prominent anchor departure in 2016. At least not yet.

Nailed it. They haven’t. But HBO did, in partnership with VICE.

You all called this one. Ainsley Earhardt was named co-host of F&F in February.

Come back tomorrow when we’ll be posting our 2017 polls. And here’s a look back at the results of TVNewser Challenges past:
