Despite What WZZM Says, Longtime Anchor Says He’s ‘Not Retiring’

WZZM anchor Lee Van Ameyde is leaving Grand Rapids, Mich., ABC affiliate after more than 38 years there.

The TEGNA-owned station says he’s retiring. But mlive reports Van Ameyde told people on Facebook, “This is what I want you all to know — while I am leaving WZZM, I have no intention of retiring.”

TEGNA has been giving buyouts to employees over the age of 55, with more than 15 years of service.

“Lee has done it all in the newsroom in the past four decades: reporter, producer, anchor, and most recently leading our Watchdog Investigative Team,” said Janet Mason, WZZM president & GM. “Lee may be retiring from WZZM, but we know he is looking forward to his next adventure.

Before joining WZZM in 1977, Van Ameyde was the news director at WEYI in Flint, Mich.
