Longtime Reporters Leave WVEC After Taking TEGNA Buyout

By Kevin Eck

Two reporters who both have over 30 years of experience have left Hampton Roads ABC affiliate WVEC after taking the TEGNA buyouts.

Joe Flanagan and Velma Scaife left the station last Friday.

“There’s no reporter who covers the peninsula better than Velma,” said news director Doug Wieder. “Her longevity in the market means she brings tremendous credibility to her reporting.”

Flanagan started at the station in 1985. Scaife started a year later as an anchor.

“Joe has put so much of himself into his stories, into this station and into the community, After over 31 years of excellent journalism at WVEC ABC13, we know he has truly earned this ‘Joe’s Job,’” said GM Kari Jacobs.
